What Is My PhD About?

My project explores the everyday lives of interfaith families and adults raised in interfaith families in London. It looks at how they build belonging and communities around their multiple religious connections, knowledge and affinities. And how these may inspire social activism.

Why This Matters?

Interfaith families provide a unique lens through which to better understand plural societies like London. Migration and diaspora studies have shown that responses to increased diversity in the last decades have often resulted in fears of cultural dilution or loss. Moreover, polarised public discourse exacerbates the tendency of people to see themselves as circumscribed in close, like-minded, and categorically homogenous groups. By studying interfaith families, my research aims at enhancing awareness of the multiplicities and cross-cutting features of social categories. The experiences of interfaith families offer a perspective for change, as new principles of “belonging” may emerge that are neither exclusionary nor bounded.

How Can You Help Me?

If you are 18 or older, were raised in London and/ or have lived in London for most of your life, and you are:

  • part of an interfaith family (e.g., you were raised by parents ascribing to different religions) and/

    or

  • in a relationship with a person of a different religion/ no religion
